owner / head chef
Chef / Owner Alex McCoy has been challenging the limits of traditional sushi for over ten years in Philadelphia. His imaginative sushi creations have a distinct style, carefully balancing tradition and ingenuity. His menu, especially his beloved specialty rolls, represent his unique personality and experiences.
Alex’s composed nature, hospitable charm, and remarkable culinary expertise pervade every detail of his intimate, 38-seat, flagship restaurant Umai Umai (founded in 2005) located in the cozy Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Alex’s international family history and travels have helped set the stage for him to externalize his artistry in the culinary arts for over twenty years. He continually experiments and pushes the envelope.
Alex is recognized by patrons and industry insiders alike as one of the top chefs in Philadelphia. He has worked under several world-renowned Japanese sushi masters, including Morimoto and Teikoku, and is a recipient of dozens of accolades, including a 2006 James Beard award for his tuna bruschetta.
